White mould can appear as a pale, fuzzy growth or as a distinctive white film on a surface that has remained damp for a long time. It may be found on wallpaper, carpets and other porous building materials. Because it looks lighter and less alarming than black mould, it is easy to underestimate. However, the colour of the growth does not reveal whether the underlying moisture problem is minor, persistent or already affecting the material beneath the surface.

A white deposit can also be confused with other substances. This uncertainty is one reason not to base an assessment solely on appearance. What matters is that visible mould growth is associated with moisture remaining where it should not. Why white mould returns on damp materials
